Two candidates have been duly nominated to contest for the Rukungiri Municipality mayoral seat ahead of the 2026 elections.

Kansiime Boaz Matita, the NRM flag bearer, and Denis Ngabirano were nominated by the Rukungiri District Electoral Commission on Tuesday.

Ngabirano pledged to foster development in the municipality, improve healthcare services, revamp education, and transform the agriculture sector to boost food production and incomes.

Boaz Matita, on his part, vowed to stabilise Rukungiri as a whole, address the issue of sanitary lanes, and ensure proper murram fitting on municipal roads to replace mud. He further promised to improve waste management, lobby investors to boost business and production, and uplift the education system within the municipality.

Speaking to our reporter, Namara K. Abas, the Rukungiri District Returning Officer, cautioned nominees against early campaigning, warning that doing so could lead to disqualification. He urged all candidates to submit any remaining required documents by tomorrow to complete the nomination process.

Abas reminded contestants to wait for the official campaign schedule that will be set by the NRM Electoral Commission before engaging voters.
