Two bodies of victims from the fatal Kasaba bus crash that occurred on April 7, 2026, remain unclaimed at Lyantonde Hospital Mortuary, police have confirmed.
Speakingwith our reporter on Wednesday evening, the Senior Commissioner of Police and Director of Traffic and Road Safety, Lawrence Niwabiine, said that out of the 11 people who lost their lives in the accident, relatives had not yet come forward to identify two of the deceased.
The bus, registration number UAL 492H, was traveling from Rukungiri to Kampala when it collided with a box-body lorry, registration number UBH 013Q, which was heading in the opposite direction from Kampala to Mbarara. The crash occurred at around 1:00 a.m. at Karegero Town along the Mbarara–Masaka Highway, approximately four kilometers from Lyantonde Town.
According to eyewitnesses, the collision happened when the lorry rammed into the bus from behind, producing a loud impact that drew nearby residents to the scene.
Eight people died on the spot, while three others succumbed to injuries at Lyantonde Hospital, bringing the total number of fatalities to 11. Among the deceased is a police officer identified as Abaho, who was attached to Mukono Police Station.
Greater Masaka Regional Police Spokesperson Twaha Kasirye confirmed the incident, noting that preliminary investigations point to possible over speeding by both drivers as a contributing factor. He added that the bus driver is currently on the run, and efforts are underway to locate him and establish the exact cause of the crash.
Niwabiine urged members of the public, particularly those with relatives who may have travelled on Easter Monday evening, to check with authorities. He warned that if the bodies remain unclaimed, they will be buried in a gazetted public cemetery in accordance with the law.
After the accident, survivors of the crash were taken to Lyantonde Hospital for treatment.
