Residents of Kamukuringwa Cell, Kyabashenyi Parish, Nyamunuka Town Council in Ntungamo District have decried the lack of electricity in their area, saying it is putting their businesses at greater risk, including theft, due to the absence of security lighting.
Kamugisha Levi, the LC1 Chairperson of Kamukuringwa Cell, speaking to Boona FM, noted that residents have suffered from the lack of electricity for a long time.
Furthermore, Kamugisha explained that he reported the issue to the Member of Parliament for Kajara Constituency, Hon. Tumuzugu Michael Kamugisha, who submitted it to the Rural Electrification Agency (REA), the body responsible for supplying electricity in rural areas. However, at the time, the agency was halted and later merged into line ministries.
In conclusion, Kamugisha said that all hopes are now in the newly elected Member of Parliament for Kajara, Hon. James Hunter Tukahirwa. He therefore called upon all leaders to cooperate and work together towards the development of Kamukuringwa and Kajara at large.
Ainebyoona Nicholas and Amanyire Arnold, both residents of Kamukuringwa Cell, also noted that they have suffered from this problem for a long time. Ainebyoona stated that there are only two electric poles in the entire cell, which cannot supply electricity to the whole area. He therefore requested the responsible authorities to address the issue.
Amanyire explained that the lack of electricity has hindered their work and appealed to leaders, through the newly elected MP for Kajara, to work together to resolve the problem.
Tumwesigye Hilary and Katunguka Fred, also residents of Kamukuringwa Cell, said that the lack of electricity is threatening their lives since they cannot afford solar energy. Tumwesigye suggested that the problem may be due to poor leadership in the area.
Katunguka added that they are at high risk of theft and other crimes due to the absence of electricity. He further noted that the area is also facing other challenges, including water scarcity, poor roads, and the lack of a health centre in Kyabashenyi Parish.
Yasini Katafa, the newly elected Mayor of Nyamunuka Town Council, assured residents that plans are already underway to address the challenges of electricity, water scarcity, poor health services, and roads in Nyamunuka and Kajara at large.
