Authorities in Rukungiri District are holding two suspected thieves for allegedly stealing two goats.

According to OC Station Rukungiri, ASP Kisakye Michael, the suspects are Nyanzi John, who was found with suspected goat meat at his butcher’s shop located in Rwenkurijo Cell, Nyakaina Parish, Buyanja Sub County in Rukungiri District, and Nshemerirwe Edson, who allegedly sold one of the goats to Nyanzi without any local council documentation.

ASP Michael told Boona FM that it was in the early hours of Thursday, 29th August 2024, when they received a tip-off from a concerned resident of Rwenkurijo who, in the middle of the night, spotted Nyanzi opening his doors and receiving the slaughtered goat believed to have been stolen from elsewhere.

Police immediately swung into action and found the suspect with the said goat meat, and he failed to account for its origin, leading to his arrest, along with Edson, who had arrived to defend him.

According to ASP Michael, some investigations indicate that Nyanzi has connections with other thieves in the district who have been supplying him with stolen goats, who are also yet to be arrested. He mentioned some of the sub-counties in which animal theft is rampant, including Buhunga, Bwambara, Bugangari, and Buyanja.

Police have commended the local community for their vigilance and urged them to continue sharing information with authorities to curb animal theft in the district.

The case under reference number SD 25/29/08/2024 was opened at Rukungiri Police Station pending investigations.
