Kanungu police have arrested two suspects in connection with the theft of three basins of coffee in Kihihi Town Council. The suspects, identified as Praise Agnes and Twongyirwe Justus, both residents of Kihembe Cell, are currently in custody at Kihihi Police Station.
The stolen coffee belonged to Tugume Laban, a resident of Kihihi Town Council, and was taken from his compound on the night of March 23, 2025. Upon discovering the theft, Tugume promptly reported the incident to Kihihi Police Station, prompting an investigation.
According to ASP Maate Elly, the Kigezi Region Police Spokesperson, police deployed a sniffer dog, which tracked the scent to Praise Agnes’ home, where the stolen coffee was found. During interrogation, Praise Agnes implicated Twongyirwe Justus, who allegedly intended to sell the stolen coffee.
The police have concluded their investigations, and the suspects are expected to appear in court soon. ASP Maate Elly commended the swift response of the police and the canine unit, emphasizing their commitment to fighting crime in the region.
Coffee theft remains a major concern for farmers in Kanungu District, where coffee is a valuable cash crop. Farmers frequently fall victim to thieves, leading to financial losses.
ASP Maate Elly reassured the public that police will continue working closely with the community to prevent such crimes. He urged farmers to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to law enforcement.
The arrest of the two suspects serves as a strong warning to criminals and a reassurance to residents that the police are dedicated to maintaining law and order in Kanungu District.
