Kanungu police have apprehended two suspects in connection with the theft of coffee from the garden of Tugabirwe Bernard, the chairperson of Nkwenda Cell, Southern Ward.
The suspects, identified as Gwido Akeija and an individual from Congo, were arrested following a report filed by Tugabirwe on December 31, 2024. Tugabirwe had alleged that unknown individuals had stolen coffee from his plantation.
Police, utilizing canine services and detectives from Bwindi Police Post, preserved the crime scene and deployed a tracking dog. The dog tracked a trail for approximately 1.2 kilometers, leading to the doorway of Gwido Akeija’s home, where it stopped.
Akeija was taken into custody and admitted to the theft during interrogation. He also implicated an accomplice, a Congolese worker employed at the home of Penina Benoni.
Both suspects have been transferred to Butogota Police Station as investigations continue.
Kigezi Regional Police Spokesperson, ASP Elly Maate, confirmed the arrests and stated that inquiries into the case are ongoing.
