Police in Mitooma District are currently investigating a tragic incident in which two individuals were electrocuted and lost their lives instantly.
The incident occurred on May 18, 2024, at approximately 5:00 AM, within the premises of Nyakishojwa Secondary School playground, located in Rurehe Sub-county, Mitooma District.
Marcial Tumusiime, the spokesperson for the Greater Bushenyi police, confirmed the incident. The deceased have been identified as 14-year-old Christian Gumoshabe, a resident of Rurehe village in Kabira Sub-county, and 16-year-old Patience Kabahinda, hailing from Bushasha A Lc1 in Ryengyerero Parish, both within Mitooma District.
Allegedly, Nyakishojwa Catholic Parish had been hosting Pentecostal prayer conferences, drawing large congregations for spiritual activities.
The tragic event unfolded during the annual four-day conference when Gumoshabe and Kabahinda were participating in the congregation. However, on the morning of May 18th, Gumoshabe was electrocuted and collapsed. Kabahinda, an usher, rushed to assist, believing Gumoshabe was under spiritual attack. Unfortunately, she also suffered electrocution upon contact with Gumoshabe’s body, and both passed away before reaching the hospital.
Further investigation by police detectives revealed that the source of electricity for the sound system and lighting during the event was a generator. The electrical setup was reportedly handled by Anatoli Guloba Mbaasa, who was not an electrician. Due to heavy rainfall, parts of the ground became waterlogged, causing the cables to be exposed. Consequently, the metallic tent stand touched by the deceased became electrified due to the combination of rainwater and exposed electric wires.
