A small community in Kanungu is grappling with shock and sorrow after the mysterious death of Moses Tugume, a 39-year-old resident of Matanda 1 cell in Kihihi sub-county.

The incident, currently under investigation by local authorities, reportedly occurred on the night of December 4, 2023, at Kirinza trading centre in Kiruruma village. According to preliminary reports from the Kanungu Police, Tugume was enjoying an evening at the bar owned by Mwetonda William, accompanied by his brother David, and friends Musiibe and Christopher.

Trouble arose when a heated argument broke out between Tugume and Musiibe. Christopher intervened, urging Musiibe to disengage from the altercation. Despite the warning, the trio left the bar at 22:00 hours, but Tugume never made it home.

Concerned for her son’s well-being, Tugume’s mother, Tindamanyire, initiated a search on December 5, 2023. After exhausting efforts to locate him at the trading center and among friends and relatives, she reported his disappearance to the Kihihi police station.

Tragically, on December 6, 2023, at around 11:00 hours, a villager named Kato Rosemary discovered Tugume’s lifeless body in Kayembe village while tending to her goats in a nearby bush. The LC1 chairperson of Kayembe was alerted, confirming the identity of the deceased as Tugume Moses.

Law enforcement promptly responded to the scene, conducting a thorough investigation. The body, showing signs of stab wounds, scratches, and a partially severed neck, was documented, and a sketch plan of the scene was drawn.

Tugume’s remains were transported to the Kihihi mortuary for a postmortem examination before being handed over to grieving relatives for a dignified burial. David Nkwasibwe was arrested as a suspect in the case, while Musiibe remains at large.

As the community mourns the loss of one of its own, the Kanungu Police continue their inquiries into the circumstances surrounding Moses Tugume’s tragic demise.
