Police in Bushenyi District have launched investigations into the tragic death of a first-year nursing student at Kampala International University (KIU), who was found dead in an apparent suicide near the university hostel.
The deceased, identified as John Lukoma, 20, was discovered early Friday morning hanging from an avocado tree near the male student residence. According to Apollo Tayebwa, the acting spokesperson for Greater Bushenyi Police, the body was found by a security guard at approximately 6:40 a.m., who then immediately notified authorities.
Police swiftly responded and retrieved the body, which was later transported to Kampala International Teaching Hospital mortuary for a post-mortem examination to establish the exact cause of death.
While the motive remains under investigation, some students, speaking on condition of anonymity, indicated that Lukoma had been battling emotional distress, allegedly linked to financial challenges, including unpaid tuition fees, with end-of-semester exams approaching.
Authorities have encouraged students facing mental health challenges to seek help, and have called on institutions and communities to strengthen support systems for young people coping with academic and financial pressures.
Bushenyi Police say they are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident.
