The territorial police in Rukungiri are investigating a tragic road traffic accident that claimed three lives on the night of May 19, 2025.

According to the Kigezi region police spokesperson, ASP Elly Maate, the crash occurred around 8:22 PM at Rwabigangura Cell, Kebisoni Town Council, along the Rukungiri-Ntungamo road. The accident involved a Toyota Hiace (registration number UBJ 330Y) and a Bajaj Boxer motorcycle (registration number UFH 694X).

Preliminary investigations suggest that the motorcycle, which was headed from Rukungiri town towards Ntungamo, veered off its lane and collided head-on with the Toyota Hiace. The impact killed all three people on the motorcycle instantly.

The deceased have been identified as

  • Agirabyona Danison, a 38-year-old male passenger, resident of Kajara County in Ntungamo District.
  • The motorcycle rider, whose identity remains unknown.
  • An unidentified female passenger on the same motorcycle.

Two other victims were injured in the crash. The driver of the taxi, Ruhangaariho Apollo, is currently receiving treatment at a yet-to-be-identified private clinic. Another passenger, Nahurira Gift, aged 20, is admitted at Nyakibale Hospital.

ASP Maate confirmed that the scene was visited and documented, with a sketch plan drafted and the bodies conveyed to Rwakabengo Health Centre III mortuary for postmortem examinations. The wreckage of both vehicles has been towed to Central Police Station (CPS) pending inspection by the Inspectorate of Vehicles (IOV).

Police have attributed the primary cause of the accident to reckless riding by the motorcycle operator. Further inquiries are ongoing.
