Grief and solemnity filled the air in Nyamubogore Cell, Nyeibingo Parish, Kebisoni Sub County, as thousands of mourners gathered to pay their final respects to John Tumwe Tibenda, a retired security officer who served in the Office of the President under the External Security Organisation (ESO) as a trainer.
The late Tibenda, 72, succumbed to prostate cancer at Vitoria Hospital in Kampala. He is survived by his widow, Lilian Tibenda, nine children, and twelve grandchildren.
During the funeral service, Asbert Nkunda Tibenda, the deceased’s eldest son, described his father as a friendly parent, a mentor, and a firm disciplinarian who impacted many lives.
Lilian Tibenda, the widow, praised her late husband for his unconditional love, commitment to development, and integrity. She extended her gratitude to the Office of the President for working closely with her husband and for honouring him in retirement.
Preaching during the service, Venerable Andrew Kananura, the Archdeacon of Kakinga, urged Christians to remain steadfast in their faith even during difficult times. He cautioned against seeking solutions through witchcraft and warned against gossip, which he said divides and shames the Christian community.
Rukungiri District LC5 Chairperson Geoffrey Kyomukama hailed the late Tibenda as a valuable and resourceful citizen. He encouraged residents to participate in community associations that foster unity across tribal and religious lines. He also called on citizens to vote wisely for leaders who can spur meaningful development.
The late John Tumwe Tibenda was laid to rest at his ancestral home in Nyamubogore amid heartfelt tributes and military honors.
