Authorities in Sheema district on Wednesday closed down Butsibo secondary school and arrested four teachers and three students over a strike.
The incident happened in Butsibo one cell Kashozi ward Kashozi Division in Sheema municipality in Sheema district.
Marcial Tumusiime the greater Bushenyi police spokesperson identified the four teachers as Hopekins Ninsiima, Ezra Kato, Clement Kyarikunda, and Betty Musiime.
He identified the three students as Blair Agaba Kabarungi Isaac, Katongole Hamza, and Precious Atamba.
Others are Marion Kembabazi the school secretary and Ricky Isingoma a casual laborer.
It’s alleged that the Ministry of Education and Sports late last month retired the school head teacher Twehamye Geoffrey after he requested early retirement since he had not yet clocked 60 years.
He was replaced with Mwesigwa Robert and after the handover on Monday the students, teachers, and non-teaching staff were not happy.
He said the candidate classes that were sitting for exams where abandoned them and attacked the stores and poured down maize flour and beans down.
This prompted the new head teacher to inform the police after realizing that there was a pending strike at the school.
However, after a meeting with security students accepted to go back to class and lessons resumed until Wednesday morning when students went on a rampage and started breaking the window/ door glasses and later burnt one of the boy’s dormitories.
This forced authorities to send all the students home until further notice and a case of arson, and malicious damage was reported at the Sheema police station.
