Taxpayers in Rukungiri have voiced their concerns about insufficient awareness regarding the Uganda Revenue Authority’s (URA) system. They argue that some taxpayers, particularly those who are illiterate, require more education to understand the processes within the revenue authority and avoid confusion.

These concerns were raised during the first day of a two-day URA workshop designed to inform taxpayers about the new business policy. The workshop covered topics such as digital transformation and the use of the URA web portal.

Ronald Kyarimpa Kakonkoma, the director of Kakonkoma’s garage, emphasized the necessity for URA to improve its sensitization efforts. Albert Mugisha, another participant in the workshop, highlighted the challenge of equitable assessment of taxpayers, pointing out that there is an imbalance when individuals with large businesses pay the same taxes as those with smaller ones in the same industry.

During the workshop, facilitator Brian Apollo Tusubira from URA addressed the participants, explaining that taxi ledgers have been simplified for easy reconciliation, VAT returns are now web-based, and Microsoft Excel templates will no longer be used in the future.

Tusubira cautioned taxpayers to ensure timely payment of monthly returns, revealing that there is a penalty of 200,000 for any missed monthly returns. The workshop attracted participants from Rukungiri, Ntungamo, and Kanungu.
