Spencer Byamukama, formerly a Lay reader in the Church of Uganda’s Diocese of Kigezi, has been ordained and installed as the Vicar of Kigezi Reformed Anglican Church Archdeaconry in Kabale District.

The ordination and installation ceremony of Rev. Byamukama occurred on Sunday, overseen by Archbishop Prof. Jonathan Kyangasha of the Reformed Anglican Church. Kigezi Reformed Anglican Church Archdeaconry, located in Mwanjari, southern Division of Kabale Municipality, was established in October of the preceding year and currently has around 100 worshippers, as noted by Rev. Spencer Byamukama.

Rev. Byamukama’s departure from the Church of Uganda in 2021 was due to conflicts with the leadership of Kizinga Archdeaconry, where he served as a lay reader within the Diocese of Kigezi, Kabale District. He mentioned harassment from Kizinga Archdeaconry’s leaders over his advocacy of Christian rights within the Church of Uganda as the reason for transitioning to the Reformed Anglican Church.

During the inauguration of Kigezi Reformed Anglican Church Archdeaconry, Archbishop Prof. Jonathan Kyangasha urged Christians to provide strong support to ensure its growth, aiming to eventually elevate it to a Diocese.

While the roots of the Reformed Anglican Church can be traced back to 1789, its formal registration in Uganda took place in 2020, according to Archbishop Prof. Jonathan Kyangasha, who oversees the Reformed Anglican Church in Uganda.
