Mr. Mwesigwa Obed Mayanja, the Speaker of Nyakagyeme Sub County in Rukungiri District and Councilor representing Masya Parish, is facing a precarious situation due to unpaid medical bills. Mayanja suffered kidney injuries during the 2021 general election when an unidentified person struck him with a brick while he was involved in political mobilization for the National Resistance Movement (NRM).
Following the incident, he received medical care at Rujumbura Medical Center in Rukungiri Municipality, Karoli Lwanga Nyakibale Hospital, and was eventually referred to Mulago Referral Hospital. He has been dependent on monthly medications costing 540,000/= (Five hundred forty thousand shillings only) from Mulago Referral Hospital in Kampala.
Mayanja expressed gratitude for the support he has received from the Councilors and staff of Nyakagyeme Sub County, as well as the Rukungiri District Local Government Speaker’s Association. However, he revealed on Wednesday, January 3rd, 2024, at his residence in Omukatoogo Trading Center, Masya Parish, Nyakagyeme Sub County, that he is burdened by accumulating debts related to his medical expenses.
Asiimwe Lovence, the Chairperson of the Rukungiri District Local Government Speaker’s Association, acknowledged the concerning state of Mayanja’s life, emphasizing the financial strain imposed by the costly medications. Lovence called on local leaders in Rukungiri District, including Members of Parliament, to rally support for their ailing colleague.
Hon. Natukunda Midius Kaharata, the Rukungiri Woman Member of Parliament, expressed awareness of Mayanja’s illness but was not informed about the severity of his situation. She urged collaboration among leaders to address the challenges faced by Mayanja.
