Rukungiri district emerged as the victor in the Abaijana clan western regional league of 2024. The participating clans included Abaijana from Rukungiri district, Ijumo from Mitooma district, Bukanga from Isingiro district, and Kajara from Ntungamo district.
The football competition, held at Ruruku primary school playground in the western division of Rukungiri municipality, concluded with Rukungiri securing the championship with 7 points. Bukanga followed with 4 points, Ijumo with 3 points, and Kajara also earning 3 points.
Mathias Tirukanya, the National clan chairperson, stated that the primary objective of organizing this football league was to foster unity among clan members and provide an opportunity for mutual education on combating poverty. He highlighted that such gatherings played a crucial role in preventing incest by allowing children to get to know each other through sports and interactions.
Before the football matches, Abaijana initiated a workshop aimed at educating the youth, women, and men on how to initiate developmental projects to alleviate poverty within the clan. The workshop facilitator, Mzee Sam Katungwensi from Ijumo in Mitooma, emphasized the need for collective efforts in addressing poverty. He pointed out that the rise in youth poverty was attributed to a shift away from productive activities towards pursuits like betting, playing pool, cards, and others.
Katungwensi underscored the significance of working collaboratively in groups or associations to achieve substantial development.
