The Rukungiri municipality legislator Hon Dr. Elisa Rutahigwa has began installing solar street lights in different trading centers in Rukungiri municipality.

In August 2022, during his victory party that took place in Rukungiri main stadium, over 50m was collected towards procuring street lights for different trading centers with the aim of reducing crimes committed under the cover of darkness

The lights are being installed in Marumba, Kakonkoma  Katobo, Kakyeka , Omukarere Ruruku, Omukyitibiko  Ahakashitaamo Nyakyibale, Kagashe, Omukarere Rwetondo, and Kayanga trading centers.

According to Hon Rutahigwa, each solar street light costs 8 million shillings.  

  Micheal Byarugaba the political assistant to the Rukungiri municipality member of parliament asked members of the public to guard the street lights against thieves who may attempt to steal solar panels and their batteries
