The Kisoro Chief Magistrate court, presided over by His Worship Keneth Komakech, handed down one-year jail sentences to seven men convicted of opium consumption. The convictions resulted from an incident on October 31, 2023, when the individuals were found with opium in Southern Division, Kisoro Municipality.

The seven offenders, all in their 18s, were identified as Turinayo Joshua, Irankunda Emmanuel, Nizeyimana Brain, Nsengiyumva Innocent, Ndaruhutse N, Muhumuza Gerald, and Halerimana James.

During the proceedings, the prosecution, led by Ellen Nambi, called for a punitive sentence, emphasizing the prevalence of such cases in society. In response, the convicts appealed for leniency, stating that it was their first offense involving opium.

After carefully considering arguments from both sides, His Worship Komakech revealed that the convicts had already spent one month and 20 days in remand. Consequently, he imposed a one-year jail sentence on each individual, to be served at Kisoro government prison.
