The business community in Rutenga Town Council, Kanungu District, is urging the Uganda Electricity Distribution Company Limited (UECDL) to address the frequent power outages that are adversely impacting local businesses.
In an interview with Boona FM, Brian Amanya, a barber shop operator in the area, expressed concern about the frequent power blackouts, stating that it has significantly affected business operations. He mentioned that the area typically experiences only about a week of electricity in a month, and even when power is available, the voltage is insufficient to operate electronic machines.
Buroosa Ainembabazi, the district councilor representing Rutenga sub-county, emphasized that the power shortage hinders business activities beyond 6:00 pm, leading to increased insecurity in the area due to the onset of darkness. The persistent power outages have caused substantial setbacks for businesses, forcing them to incur additional expenses on fuel, ultimately reducing their profits.
Furthermore, Buroosa highlighted the impact on educated youth in the area, who remain unemployed as certain jobs requiring electricity, such as stationery, libraries, and salons, cannot operate effectively.
He appealed to the UECDL Muhanga branch to intervene and assist the local community in finding a solution to the ongoing challenge of power blackouts.
