The court proceedings for the cases filed by concerned citizens of Ruhinda Sub-county, accusing district officials of destroying their gardens in efforts to restore wetlands, did not occur today.

This was due to the absence of Rukungiri High Court Resident Judge Justice Tom Chemutai, as mentioned by Arineitwe Peter, the managing partner of the legal firm Arineitwe Peter, and Advocates representing the Ruhinda residents.

It’s important to note that the Rukungiri High Court had scheduled March 5, 2024, as the date for hearing the case between Rukungiri district officials and residents of Ruhinda Sub-county.

In November 2023, a total of 85 residents from Parishes of Kicwamba, Rwamugoma, Burombe, and Ndere sued Rukungiri district officials, including district Water and Environment officers and Ruhinda Subcounty GISO, for wrongful land demarcations and property destruction during the wetlands restoration operation.

Counsel Arineitwe Peter stated that they will await another date to be set by the Resident Judge for the proceedings to proceed.
