Traders in Rukungiri district, under the leadership of their chairperson, Chrisystom Byaruhanga Rwakaana, have expressed their solidarity with Kampala traders in opposing the perceived unfairness of the Uganda Revenue Authority’s taxation system. They argue that the current tax regime is detrimental to their businesses and are prepared to join in protests. However, they lament that they were not adequately mobilized by the organizers in Kampala in time to participate in the recent strike.
Rwakaana emphasizes that traders in Rukungiri also face burdensome taxes, including those imposed by URA and municipal authorities. He believes that the business community contributes significantly to tax revenue and calls for their leaders to advocate on their behalf, particularly regarding concerns such as high taxes and other challenges like rent and transportation costs.
Highlighting the absence of a traditional pension for businesspeople, Rwakaana suggests that the government should consider reducing taxes to support traders, as their businesses serve as their retirement plans.
Tomorrow, parliament is anticipated to receive a petition from the Kampala Capital City Traders Association regarding their grievances over escalating taxes.
