Two individuals have been apprehended by the police in Kanungu for interrogation, suspected of being involved in the murder of Bernard Byamugisha, aged 49, a Mukiga by tribe and a peasant farmer residing in Bushoro Cell, Nyamigoye Parish, Kanyantorogo Sub County, Kanungu District.

The arrested suspects are Ivan Ampumuza, aged 20, also a Mukiga by tribe and a peasant farmer residing at the same address, and Morine Tukamushaba, aged 23, also a Mukiga by tribe and a peasant farmer residing at the same address.

    Reportedly, on April 15, 2024, around 1:30 PM, the deceased went to his coffee plantation to harvest coffee beans and did not return home until April 16, 2024, at about 8:00 AM. Upon the son of the deceased, Ampumuza (one of the suspects), inquiring about his father’s whereabouts from neighbors, the community searched the coffee plantation and discovered the body of the deceased lying about 3 kilometers from his home. The deceased had ongoing family conflicts with his children, who had previously made threats against his life.

    The deceased was found lying on his back with strangulation marks on his neck.

    The police were alerted by Emmanuel Biryomumisho, the crime scene was inspected and documented, relevant statements were recorded, and a postmortem examination was conducted at the crime scene. The body was then handed over to the relatives for a decent burial. The two suspects, who happen to be the biological son and daughter of the deceased, have been detained to assist in the investigation.
