The Ntungamo District Police, under the leadership of District Police Commander Busheija Hannington, apprehended members of the Boona Bagaigahare Nyekundire Group on Tuesday, April 16th, 2024. However, they were soon released at the Rwahi Police Post.

The members of Boona Bagaigahare Nyekundire Group had organized a peaceful demonstration in Rwahi Rwentondo Town Council to express their dissatisfaction with both the general public and the President regarding political issues that had hindered their operations.

This group, led by Madam Peace Rugambwa, a farmer and respected senior citizen of Rwahi Town Council, aims to promote quality homesteads in the Southern Western Districts of Uganda.

Mr. Asiimwe Nicholas Mwamba, a member of the group, highlighted that the demonstration was a show of solidarity in addressing setbacks in onion growing, which has been a key economic activity in the area since Peace Rugambwa’s support ceased in 2016.

Rubegyemera Sabiiti, the Coordinator of Boona Bagaigahare Nyekundire Group in Ntungamo District, expressed the members’ discomfort following communication from the President confirming the transparency of Peace Rugambwa, yet her services were affected by politics.

District Police Commander Busheija Hannington stated that the group was apprehended for staging a demonstration without permission, blocking a national highway, and presenting weak complaints.

The Boona Bagaigahare Nyekundire Group was receiving support from the government in various forms, including onions, goats, pigs, maize seedlings, tomatoes, poultry, and advisory services. They were also in the process of forming a SACCO, which unfortunately stalled.
