Traders in Rukungiri are expressing disappointment over the lackluster turnout during the back-to-school season, stating that customer traffic has been notably low. Business owners in the area are reporting significantly fewer customers compared to previous terms and years, with students and parents showing minimal interest in purchasing essential items such as metallic cases, mattresses, books, and pens.
Mrs. Barbara Kukundakwe, a prominent businesswoman in Rukungiri municipality, voiced her concerns, highlighting the lack of customers and the stagnant inventory of goods in her shop.
Similarly, Mr. Patrick, another local businessman, echoed these sentiments, attributing the poor sales to parents prioritizing saving money for school fees over purchasing supplies.
In an interview with our reporter, Mr. Byaruhanga Chrysostom Rwakana, the chairperson of Rukungiri district’s business community, elaborated on the challenges faced by traders.
He noted the relatively low population density in Rukungiri, which limits the potential customer base. Additionally, the scarcity of schools in the district contributes to the reduced foot traffic, as many students are waiting for senior classes to commence before making purchases.
Mr. Rwakana emphasized that despite expectations of increased business during the back-to-school season, the reality has been disappointing due to various factors including population size and school availability.
