The Rukungiri district roads committee has voiced its dissatisfaction with the Uganda National Roads Authority for consistently delaying responses to address the deteriorating roads within their jurisdiction in the district.
This concern was raised during a meeting of the Rukungiri district roads committee held at Rukungiri Inn in Eastern Division, Rukungiri municipality. The committee, led by its Chairperson, Hon Dr. Elisa Rutahigwa, visited various roads and bridges across Rukungiri municipality to assess their condition.
During the inspection, the committee noted that access roads to public places and residences along the ongoing Rukungiri-Kanungu tarmac road were not properly constructed, posing risks to people’s lives. Specific areas of concern included the Kanyamajuta bridge in Mutara cell in Karangaro ward, Kitengure bridge connecting Southern Division and Nyakagyeme sub-county, and the Nyakihanga-Fuluma-Kitibiko road in Karangaro ward, all of which require urgent attention.
Hon Dr. Rutahigwa expressed frustration over the delayed road works within Rukungiri Municipality, particularly along the Rukungiri-Kanungu tarmac road. The committee requested that UNRA provide a report addressing the raised concerns.
Furthermore, Hon Dr. Rutahigwa highlighted the challenge faced by Rukungiri Municipality in maintaining roads due to the use of an old grader in poor mechanical condition. Efforts are underway among leaders to lobby for a replacement from the government to ensure timely road maintenance.
Minister of Security Maj Gen Jim Muhwezi commended the efforts of the roads committee for their proactive approach, noting their visits to all three counties within the district. He encouraged residents to adopt proper farming practices that do not adversely affect roads and bridges.
On the same day, the committee inaugurated the Bashama bridge in Southern Division, which cost over 60 million Ugandan Shillings. They also inspected the ongoing construction of Kyatoko bridge, where Denis Ngabirano, Chairperson of LC3 Southern Division, urged the committee to consider additional bridges to enhance transportation in the area.
