Residents of Rukungiri Municipality have raised concerns over the slow pace of development in their area compared to other municipalities, yet they participate in electing leaders like other citizens.

During a political rally held on Monday in Western Division for Hon. Mary Paula Kebirungi Turyahikayo, the Rukungiri Woman Member of Parliament NRM flag bearer, and Mr. Andrewson Charles Katebire, the LC5 Chairperson NRM flag bearer, residents expressed dissatisfaction with the challenges facing the municipality, which they said still reflect a rural setting rather than a municipal status.

They cited lack of electricity in some parts of the municipality, persistent water scarcity, and the need for improved health and education services.

Residents also decried the poor state of the central market and roads, urging Hon. Mary Paula to use her lobbying skills to transform the municipality.

Niwamanya Sam Bitakwitse, a resident of Kafunda village, revealed that they are still facing challenges that should not exist in a municipality. He noted that they are ready to support Hon. Mary Paula, citing her previous achievements in improving the lives of people in Rubabo County.

Bitakwitse expressed disappointment with leaders who, after being elected, never return to follow up on the people’s concerns, yet residents vote with the expectation of development.

Another resident expressed concern over poor garbage disposal in the municipality, urging Hon. Mary Paula and Chairman Katebire to work together to address the challenge.

Nahabwe Steven, a resident, revealed that he had been supporting Medius Kaharata but, due to dissatisfaction with her leadership, he has decided to support Hon. Mary Paula based on the development she delivered when she served as a legislator for Rubabo County.

He urged Hon. Mary Paula to remain development-oriented since the electorate has already decided to support her.

Hon. Mary Paula, who served as Rubabo County MP for 15 years, assured residents that Rukungiri Municipality can change. She noted that she will use her expertise in lobbying to ensure the installation of street lights, construction of a modern central market, and extension of electricity and water to all parts of the municipality.

She urged voters to avoid cheap politics that can keep their area behind, saying that a wrong decision during voting can hinder development for five years.

Andrewson Katebire, the LC5 NRM flag bearer, assured residents of positive change in the municipality. He noted that they plan to liaise with USMID to improve roads and upgrade the Rukungiri central market.
