Rotarian Steven Nsubuga Bewayo, the Rukungiri Resident District Commissioner (RDC), has urged people to refrain from questioning the government’s accountability for their taxes, pointing to significant projects like the Rwakabengo Small Scale Irrigation system. This system, constructed by the Ministry of Water and Environment at a cost of 500 million Uganda Shillings, was commissioned today, May 3rd, 2024, after completion in 2020.
Bewayo emphasized that instead of criticizing government accountability, attention should be directed towards recognizing credible projects like this one in Rukungiri District. Byarugaba Micheal, the Rukungiri District Secretary for Production, Works, and Natural Resources, representing the Chairperson LC5, urged farmers to take ownership of the project and advocated for ongoing support from the Ministry of Water and Environment.
Lion MJF Tagobya Prosper, the Deputy Town Clerk of Rukungiri Municipal Council, encouraged farmers to establish a savings fund for maintenance, prevent theft, and collaborate closely with technical staff for effective project management and increased yields.
Ngabirano Denis, the Chairperson of LC3 Southern Division, expressed appreciation for the government’s efforts and voiced optimism about achieving full-time food security in the area.
Mbabazi Brenda, Senior Engineer at the Ministry of Water and Environment Mbarara Branch, reiterated the project’s quality and assured farmers of the Ministry’s commitment to replacing any damaged components.
Jennifer Mwebaze, a farmer, expressed gratitude for the improved harvests thus far.
