The Resident District Commissioner (RDC) for Rukungiri, Buroni Kikanshemeza, has urged Local Council (LC) chairpersons to remain vigilant and avoid being misled by conmen posing as government representatives.

RDC Buroni made the remarks on 13th February 2026 while addressing residents of Kyabureere Parish, Bugangari Subcounty, during a preparatory meeting for the establishment of electricity in the area, convened at Kyabureere Fulgospel Church.

The government has secured $20.5 million to construct a hydroelectric dam in Nyakabungo Cell, Kyabureere Parish, which is expected to supply 8.6 megawatts of electricity. The project, to be executed by Hydromax Nengo Bridge Limited, is slated for completion in three years.

Buroni acknowledged confusion caused by individuals who approached LC1 chairpersons, claiming government connections and intending to buy land earmarked for the dam. He cautioned local leaders to “look far like a giraffe” and avoid being misled, emphasizing the importance of safeguarding the project.

He also called on the community to support the electricity project, highlighting the potential benefits such as compensation for affected residents, improved access roads, construction of classroom blocks at local primary schools, increased land value, employment opportunities, enhanced water sources, and overall development.

Ssentumbwe Godfrey, Project General Manager for Hydromax Nengo Bridge Limited, provided details of the construction work, noting that the $20.5 million project over three years will supply 8.6 megawatts, generate employment, and contribute to government revenue.

Residents of Kyabureere Parish welcomed the announcement with enthusiasm, emphasizing that electricity is greatly needed to support students studying at night, power milling machines, and boost local businesses.
