Rotarian Steven Nsubuga Bewayo, the Resident District Commissioner (RDC) of Rukungiri, has urged medical professionals to prioritize regular health checkups to combat life-threatening diseases such as diabetes, high blood pressure, cancer, and hypertension.
Speaking on Saturday at a function organized by the Lions Club Rukungiri to kick off a commemorative run for World Diabetes Day, Nsubuga emphasized that early detection of these conditions can significantly improve health outcomes. He stressed that patients can better manage their conditions and lead longer, healthier lives when diseases are diagnosed early through proper medication and lifestyle adjustments.
Nsubuga also highlighted the vital role of physical exercise in preventing chronic diseases, noting that regular activity helps regulate blood sugar levels and promotes overall well-being.
Dr. Dickson Niwasasira from Doctors Case Medicals Rukungiri addressed the participants, revealing alarming statistics: 6,383 people in Rukungiri are currently living with diabetes, and 1.7 million Ugandans are affected nationwide. Globally, diabetes claims 1.5 million lives each year, while 24 million Africans live with the condition. He warned that if current trends continue, the number of diabetes cases in Africa is projected to rise to 55 million by 2045, largely due to lifestyle changes.
Lion Eng. Hangson Niwamanya EMJF, president of the Lions Club, explained that the club’s goal in commemorating World Diabetes Day is to increase public awareness. He noted that the club is committed to educating the public about diabetes and offering free testing services. Niwamanya underscored that the run symbolizes the importance of physical exercise in the fight against diabetes.
