Rotarian Steven Nsubuga Bewayo, the Rukungiri Resident District Commissioner (RDC), has condemned public criticism of President Museveni’s recent initiative to shift coffee advisory services under the Ministry of Agriculture.
In his closing remarks at the Rukungiri District Budget Consultative Conference for the Financial Year 2025/26 held today, Tuesday, November 5, 2024, at Riverside Hotel in the Eastern Division of Rukungiri Municipality, Bewayo urged the public to support the President’s development agenda. He emphasized that this initiative, alongside other programs like the Parish Development Model (PDM), the Youth Livelihood Program, and the Uganda Women Entrepreneurship Program (UWEP), is aimed at promoting the welfare of Ugandans.
Geoffrey Kyomukama, the Rukungiri District Chairperson (LC5), encouraged farmers to expand coffee cultivation, emphasizing that coffee has a guaranteed market and does not require advanced expertise.
Charles Kahanyi, the Chairperson LC3 of Kebisoni Sub County, raised concerns about the shortage of coffee seedlings, pointing out that the price has risen to 2,500 UGX per seedling.
Albert Mugisha Rwamugaata, the District Councilor representing Buyanja Sub County, advocated for prioritizing banana cultivation, highlighting it as the region’s top cash crop that could benefit from value addition for long-term sustainability.
Rukungiri District has approved a budget projection of 55,846,272,854 UGX for the Financial Year 2025/26. Chief Administrative Officer (CAO) Hajj Masokoyi Wasswa Sealikh indicated that the highest allocations will go to coffee, banana, and milk production.
