Motorists have received a stern caution against engaging in reckless driving during the festive season, coupled with a reminder to adhere strictly to the rules and regulations governing road usage. ASP Ntawera Felix, the Officer in Charge of Traffic in Rukungiri district, emphasized this advisory as a crucial measure aimed at mitigating road accidents, especially during this holiday period.
In an interview with our reporter, Felix expressed his dismay at the prevalent disregard for established rules and regulations by road users. He attributed the alarming rate of road accidents to the reckless behavior exhibited by a significant number of drivers and riders, contravening the guidelines set forth by the Ministry of Works and Transport.
Felix issued a challenge to travelers, urging them to thoroughly inspect the mechanical conditions of their vehicles before embarking on journeys. He emphasized the importance of considering other road users, such as pedestrians and animals, to enhance overall road safety.
Deputy RDC (Resident District Commissioner) of Rukungiri district, Ahimbisibwe Wilberforce Ongom, called upon the traffic police department to execute their duties diligently, especially in anticipation of the increased number of vehicles during the Christmas festival. Ongom further encouraged drivers to abstain from driving under the influence of alcohol and to exercise caution by reducing their speed to safeguard their lives.
In a bid to prevent the devastating impact of accidents on families during the holiday season, Ongom recommended that families traveling from various destinations to their homes for Christmas should divide themselves into groups and use different vehicles. This precautionary measure aims to mitigate the potential loss of lives in the event of an accident, ensuring the safety of family members.
