Authorities at Nyaburondo Catholic Church, part of Christ the King Parish in Kitimba Parish, Nyakagyeme Subcounty, Rukungiri District, are appealing for support to complete the construction of their new church.
Denis Gumisiriza, the Nyaburondo Catholic Church Catechist, explained that the decision to construct a new church was made after the old one became dilapidated, posing risks to the lives of the worshippers, especially during rainy seasons when the church started leaking.
Gumisiriza also highlighted that the growth in the number of Christians necessitated a larger space, as the old church was too small to accommodate the increasing numbers. The Catholic community, led by the head of the laity, Mr. Zepher Karyeija, has been actively fundraising, reaching the stage of roofing through their efforts.
The new Catholic church under construction is designed to be modern and will include a Eucharist. The community has already secured over 370 iron sheets for the roofing, with hopes of completing the church in time for the Christmas festival.
John Niwamanya Patareo, the development officer, estimated that the new church would have a seating capacity of over 500 people. While progress has been made, additional funds and support are still required to complete the construction.
Some leaders have already stepped in to assist, including Hon Medius Natukunda Kaharata, the Rukungiri District woman legislator, who donated 30 bags of cement and all the necessary nails for the roofing. Athanasius Rutaro, the former Rukungiri District chairperson, played a key role in initiating the idea of constructing a new church.
