The Muslim community in Rukungiri district has been encouraged to actively engage in local and national politics leading up to the 2026 elections.
Sheik Abdul Malik Kayole Byaruhanga, the Rukungiri District Kadhi, emphasized the importance of increased Muslim representation in political positions. He noted the current underrepresentation of Muslims in political seats in the district, which has resulted in a lack of adequate representation and service delivery.
Byaruhanga urged Muslims not to hesitate in seeking leadership roles or supporting fellow Muslims who aspire to serve in political capacities. He emphasized that active participation in politics would enable them to effectively advocate for the rights and interests of Muslims and influence policies that support the growth of Islam.
Kasim Mucuguzi, the chairperson of Bikurungu County, echoed the sentiment, highlighting the benefits of Muslim involvement in politics for community development and the protection of human rights.
Similarly, Iddi Maisho, the vice chairperson of the Muslim community in Rukungiri district, emphasized the importance of embracing political participation to prevent neglect of their religion and to safeguard against policies that could be detrimental to Muslims. He stressed that being absent from the political arena would be a disservice to the Muslim community, emphasizing the need for active involvement in decision-making processes at all levels.
