Lieutenant Hatimu Mbazira, commander of the Lake Edward landing sites Fish Protection Unit (FPU), has issued a warning to fishermen at the Rwenshama landing site in Bwambara sub-county, Rukungiri district, to refrain from using harmful substances that could endanger their lives.
He noted that some fishermen were addicted to drugs such as marijuana, alcohol, and nicotine, which pose significant risks, particularly while navigating the waters for fishing. These substances impair control and increase the danger of accidents.
Lt. Mbazira highlighted that since assuming his duties as the commander on Lake Edward, his efforts have significantly reduced drug abuse among fishermen from 100% to 45%. Previously, most fishermen went fishing while under the influence, which greatly increased the risk of drowning.
Kenneth Niwagaba, the local council chairperson for Rwenshama parish in Bwambara sub-county, informed our reporter that drug abuse had been rampant at the Rwenshama landing site. However, through concerted efforts with the police, they have made significant progress in combating it, leading to a notable reduction compared to previous years.
