Kushaba Laban Katende, the Senior Environment Officer for Rukungiri Municipal, has issued a challenge to local communities to halt the encroachment on swamps and rivers and the destruction of forests, which have had adverse effects on the climate.

Laban emphasized that both the municipality and district are prioritizing tree planting in urban areas. He urged people to participate in tree planting and adopt modern farming practices in their regions as a means of mitigating climate change. He also revealed that the Municipality is planning to establish its own tree nursery bed in the upcoming financial year. The trees from this nursery will be distributed to schools, hospitals, and other non-government organizations for planting in their respective areas.

Laban encouraged individuals residing and farming near swamps and rivers to maintain a buffer zone of 100 feet from riverbanks, with the goal of reducing swamp degradation.

Mrs. Asiimwe Ivas, the Health Inspector for Rukungiri Municipality, expressed gratitude to the Ugandan government for considering the construction of a facility in Kagunga, Rukungiri Municipality, that will convert human waste into manure.

She issued a warning to residents of Rukungiri town, urging them to refrain from urinating in buckets and disposing of urine in ditches and on roads. Such practices have contributed to unpleasant odors in the town. She encouraged them to use public toilets or facilities provided in rental properties instead.
