Rukungiri Municipality Member of Parliament, Hon. Dr. Elisa Rutahirwa, has advised farmers to adopt good farming methods and conserve the environment to prevent natural hazards and related problems.
Hon. Rutahirwa made these remarks on Monday, March 31, 2025, while receiving relief food from the Office of the Prime Minister (OPM) for over 1,225 households affected by hailstorms in February and March. The hardest-hit areas include Kalangaro Ward, Kitimba, and Northern A in Western Division.
The OPM has distributed 6,122 kilograms of maize flour and beans to support affected families. According to the number of registered households and the available relief food, each home will receive 5 kg of maize flour and 5 kg of beans as emergency aid.
This relief distribution follows a damage assessment report presented by Hon. Dr. Rutahirwa to the OPM. The assessment was conducted by the Rukungiri Production Department and LC1 chairpersons, who registered all affected families.
Speaking to the media after receiving the relief food, Hon. Rutahirwa urged farmers to embrace farming practices that do not harm the environment. He warned against actions that contribute to climate change, emphasizing that such practices ultimately harm the very communities that depend on agriculture, exposing them to disasters like floods and hailstorms.
He also encouraged residents to appreciate the support and use the food wisely as they work to rebuild their livelihoods.
Meanwhile, Paul Kalenzi, Deputy Town Clerk of Rukungiri Municipal Council, expressed gratitude for the relief food, thanking both the Office of the Prime Minister and Hon. Dr. Rutahirwa for their dedication in ensuring the aid reached the affected people.
Kalenzi emphasized that the relief food is strictly for hailstorm victims and urged transparency and fairness in its distribution. He called upon those involved in the process to ensure that all registered beneficiaries receive their share without discrimination.
He also announced that the distribution will take place on Wednesday, April 2, at designated centers in Kahororo, Rukundo, and Kitimba.
