Residents of Ryengyerero Parish in Rurehe Sub-county, Mitooma District, have continued to raise concerns over the lack of electricity in their area.

The residents say they have been appealing to their leaders for a long time, but no action has been taken to address the issue.

Godfrey Mugisha, a resident of Ryengyerero, told our reporter that their area has never had electricity, forcing them to rely on solar power for salons and diesel machines for milling—services that are located far away, making it difficult for residents. He added that they depend on candles, lamps, and other alternative means for lighting, as electricity remains inaccessible.

“When we approach our leaders, they tell us that electricity is a responsibility of the central government, and they claim it is difficult for us to reach our Member of Parliament,” Mugisha said.

Brian Kabagambe, the LC1 Chairperson of Ryengyerero Cell, noted that only a few residents have access to solar power and diesel-powered machines. He stated that leaders have repeatedly promised to address the issue, but a long time has passed without any tangible response.

Evelyne Muhimbo, the LC3 Chairperson of Rurehe Sub-county, confirmed that she also faces the same challenge as her fellow residents. She revealed that out of the 14 cells in the sub-county, only one has electricity. Additionally, among the four parishes in Rurehe Sub-county, only one has access to electricity.

She further explained that when they raise the issue with district leaders, they are advised to contact their Member of Parliament, as MPs are the ones responsible for addressing such challenges.

In response, Ambrose Rwekariika, the LC5 Councilor for Rurehe Sub-county, acknowledged that the challenge is real. However, he assured residents that he is making efforts to engage the area Member of Parliament and remains hopeful that the issue will be resolved. He urged residents to be patient, noting that all government programs follow a process.
