Hon. Midius Natukunda Kaharata, the Woman Member of Parliament for Rukungiri District, has been hospitalized following a road accident on Thursday afternoon. Reports suggest that the legislator narrowly survived the incident while traveling from Kampala to Rukungiri for the holidays. The accident occurred at Kayabwe when a bus belonging to Freedom Bus Company Limited (registration number UBB648M) collided with her vehicle (registration number UBK 398J) from behind.

Eyewitnesses revealed that the bus, en route to Ibanda, attempted to overtake the legislator’s vehicle, resulting in the collision. The legislator was accompanied by her family members at the time of the accident. Following the news, well-wishers have expressed their prayers and hopes for a speedy recovery for Hon. Midius Natukunda Kaharata on various social media platforms.

One individual posted on social media, saying, “Hon. Midius Natukunda Kaharata, Rukungiri Woman MP, sorry. God indeed protected you and other occupants. Our prayers are with you.”

This incident adds to the road safety concerns during the holiday season, as reflected in the recent Police Traffic Report. Between December 25, 2023, and December 26, 2023, 33 road users lost their lives in accidents, and 156 sustained serious injuries. While this year saw fewer reported cases, the fatalities included pedestrians and riders, constituting 85%, with many incidents occurring in upcountry areas. Notably, Kapchorwa experienced a tragic accident where five people, including four children and their mother, lost their lives in a single crash along the Kapchorwa – Mbale Road.

SP Michael Kananura, the Directorate Spokesperson, emphasized that although overall cases were fewer, the need for road safety remains crucial, with pedestrian and rider safety being a significant concern.
