The territorial police in Rukungiri District are investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of Diriano Babigumira, aged 65, which occurred on the morning of Saturday, August 17th, 2024, near his home.
Diriano, a resident of Rwobo Village, Kigaaga Ward, Southern Division, Rukungiri Municipality, was found brutally murdered, with his hands severed and the lower part of his mouth mutilated. The gruesome discovery was made by his son, Onesimus Tuhamire, a student at Makobore High School Kinyasano, around 7 a.m. while on his way to school. He immediately informed the family.
Enid Turyasingura, the deceased’s wife, described her husband’s death as tragic, highlighting his credibility and attributing his murder to his frequent late-night returns home.
Steven Musasizi, the LC1 Chairperson of Rwobo Village, confirmed Diriano Babigumira’s integrity and urged residents to allow the police to conduct their investigations without interference.
Abraham Baryajuna, the Southern Division Councilor representing Kigaaga Ward, urged residents to avoid spreading rumors and to wait for the official police report, emphasizing that divine justice will ultimately expose the truth.
The homicide team, led by Detective Sergeant Didas Karyamarwaki, inspected the crime scene, recorded statements, and advised residents with relevant information to discreetly share it with the police. The detective attributed the increase in murders to domestic violence.
The body was taken to the Rwakabengo Health Center IV mortuary for a postmortem examination as investigations continue.
