Agaba Nimesius, the Rukungiri District Community Development Officer, has challenged the people of Rukungiri to prioritize working together in groups if they wish to achieve development and benefit from government programs.
He made these remarks during the end-of-year party for the association known as Buhunga My Heritage, emphasizing that the group is a strong foundation for the economic, social, and political development of Buhunga Sub-county.
Nimesius encouraged women to embrace GROW, a government initiative aimed at improving women’s income and livelihoods.
Speaking as the guest of honor, Cornelius Byarugaba, a senior auditor and chartered public accountant, urged members to set clear development goals, especially as they start the year 2025.
He noted that many people fail in life not because they lack effort, but due to poor goal setting and an inability to address setbacks effectively. Byarugaba condemned laziness, stating, “The hands of a lazy person bring poverty, but the hands of the hardworking create wealth.”
Ahimbisibwe Wilberforce Ongom, the Rukungiri Deputy Resident District Commissioner (RDC), highlighted the importance of registering associations and having constitutions to prevent misunderstandings. He revealed that authorities rely on constitutions to handle associational issues effectively.
Ongom also called on the public to join the fight against corruption in poverty eradication programs by reporting officials who exploit aspiring beneficiaries for personal gain.
Alex Tumwebaze, the Chairperson of Buhunga My Heritage, shared that the association, now two years old, has a membership of 299 people. He outlined the group’s objectives, which include fostering social networks, promoting social welfare, and initiating developmental projects. Tumwebaze encouraged the people of Buhunga to embrace and support government poverty eradication programs designed to improve living standards.
