Political and religious leaders have called on Ugandans to embrace peace, unity, and value-based decision-making as the country approaches the 2026 general elections. The message was delivered during the burial of retired mathematics teacher and community mentor Mr. Benson Bitwiire, held on Wednesday in Rwenshenkye Cell, Rubanga Parish, Buyanja Sub-county, Rukungiri District.
Presiding over the ceremony, North Kigezi Diocese Bishop Rt. Rev. Onesmus Asiimwe hailed the late Bitwiire for living a life rooted in kindness, faith, and community service. He urged mourners, especially political aspirants, to emulate the late teacher’s values and reject divisive politics.
The Rubabo County Member of Parliament, Hon. Naboth Namanya, echoed similar sentiments, warning of increased political tension as elections draw nearer.
Hon. Medius Kahaarata, Rukungiri Municipality Woman MP and sister-in-law to the deceased, remembered Bitwiire as a unifier and mentor.
Jessica Bitwiire, widow of the deceased, delivered a heartfelt tribute, praising her late husband of 45 years as a loving mentor and faithful partner. Coincidentally, the burial occurred on her 67th birthday.
District Chairperson Geoffrey Kyomukama acknowledged the family’s contributions to the region’s education and social development, assuring them of continued support from local leaders.
As Rukungiri prepares for the political season, the ceremony became a platform for reflection, calling citizens to rise above personal interest and ensure the district continues to grow in unity, integrity, and purpose.
