Veteran opposition politician and former presidential candidate Dr. Kizza Besigye has been further remanded to prison over charges related to an alleged plot to overthrow the Ugandan government.
Dr. Besigye, along with his aide Hajj Obed Lutale and retired army officer Captain Denis Oola, appeared before court under tight security. The trio, who are facing terrorism charges, have been ordered to remain in custody until May 21, 2025.
Despite several attempts to secure bail, the suspects have repeatedly been denied release. The prosecution alleges that between 2023 and November 2024, Dr. Besigye and his co-accused conspired to overthrow the government by force of arms. The purported plot reportedly involved activities in Geneva (Switzerland), Athens (Greece), Nairobi (Kenya), and Kampala City.
The state also indicated that investigations into the matter are ongoing, and that several other individuals allegedly connected to the plot remain at large.
