A wave of increased coffee theft in Buyanja Sub County, Rukungiri District, has sparked growing outrage among residents, who are now calling for urgent intervention from authorities to restore security in their communities.
The rise in theft cases has been particularly noted during the current coffee harvesting season, causing sleepless nights and heightened tension among locals. Residents report that thieves are targeting ripe coffee directly from plantations under the cover of darkness.
Joram Tukundane, a resident of Nyakasharara cell, voiced his frustration, noting that farmers are now facing unprecedented levels of theft.
Tukundane did not hold back in his criticism of local law enforcement, accusing police of failing to detain or follow through on arrests of known suspects. He warned that unless something is done soon, residents may be forced to resort to mob justice out of desperation.
Crinerio Bakacwa, the LC1 chairperson of Kihengamo cell in Rubanga parish, echoed these concerns. He observed that while theft was not a major issue in the past, the trend has escalated dramatically in recent weeks.
Bakacwa attributed the spike in thefts to unemployment among youth and drug abuse in the area, noting that some young people are now stealing to finance their drug use. He also blamed unscrupulous coffee dealers who knowingly purchase stolen coffee at cheap prices, thereby fueling the vice.
Agaba Emmy Rubondo, the LC3 chairperson of Buyanja Sub County, confirmed the surge in coffee theft cases and added that neighboring areas are also experiencing similar incidents. He warned that other forms of crime, such as housebreaking, are also on the rise.
The escalating theft crisis has now placed pressure on security agencies to act swiftly before residents take the law into their own hands. Community leaders are also pushing for a broader conversation on unemployment, youth support, and responsible community vigilance.
