The rampant cases of theft in Nyarushanje Sub-county, Rukungiri District, have raised concern among residents and local leaders.

Speaking to our reporter, the Chairperson LC III of Nyarushanje Sub-county, Rukungiri District, attributed the high cases of theft to the high poverty levels among the youth in the area, who resort to stealing as an alternative means of survival. The crimes reported include housebreaking, theft of domestic animals, and snatching personal property from night dwellers.

He said that several youths are idle, which forces them to engage in crime for survival. He urged parents to take more responsibility in safeguarding their children from drug abuse.

He blamed the rise in criminality on both the youth and elderly people who spend most of their time gambling and drinking alcohol instead of working to earn a living, which pushes them to steal. He appealed to area security teams to step up patrols within the community.

He noted that the suspects behind the thefts often rent within the same localities where they commit the crimes. However, he said security teams have managed to conduct operations in which several suspected gang members have been arrested. He warned the public to remain extra vigilant as the festive season draws closer.

Michael further urged residents to be alert and report any suspicious individuals in their communities to local leaders in order to combat these criminals.

He appealed to security teams to intensify patrols within the area, noting that what begins as petty crime can easily escalate into serious offenses, including the murder of innocent Ugandans.
