Rukungiri Institute of Management has successfully won a legal case against an individual who had produced counterfeit academic credentials falsely bearing the institute’s name in an attempt to secure employment.

The accused, Beyongyera Ripon, a resident of Rukundo in Kitagata Town Council, Sheema district, was apprehended on August 28, 2023, in Sheema district, where he was caught using fraudulent documents.

These documents claimed that on April 25, 2017, he had earned a Diploma in Medical Records Management at Rukungiri Institute of Management’s graduation ceremony.

Ripon had been using these counterfeit documents to apply for jobs in various government and private institutions, arousing suspicion among concerned individuals who reported the matter to the school and subsequently to the police.

Subsequently, the suspect was arrested and presented in court, where he was remanded to Rukungiri government custody until late August 2023, awaiting the commencement of legal proceedings.

On Tuesday, October 3, 2023, Ripon appeared before the Rukungiri Grade One Magistrate court, where he pleaded guilty to the charges brought against him. In light of his confession, Magistrate Hamida Namukasa delivered a verdict in favor of the complainant.

In her ruling, Her Worship Hamida Namukasa noted that considering the nature of the offense, the accused could face a three-year prison sentence or a fine of 300,000 Ugandan shillings.

However, due to Ripon’s admission of guilt and his cooperation with the court, the trial magistrate reduced his punishment to a two-year prison term or the option to pay a fine of 300,000 Ugandan shillings.

Following the court proceedings, Mr. Kamugisha Samuel, the Director of Rukungiri Institute of Management, expressed his concern regarding individuals resorting to fraudulent documents to secure employment, cautioning that the law would catch up with them.

When asked if he planned to appeal the ruling to recover the costs incurred in this case, Kamugisha stated that he respected the court’s decision and encouraged the public to pursue legitimate academic qualifications rather than resorting to forgery, which could have severe consequences.
