Health experts in Rukungiri District have raised public awareness about the causes and prevention of hemorrhoids, a condition commonly linked to pressure and constipation.
According to Alban Natukunda, the Rukungiri District Health Educator, both men and women are affected by hemorrhoids, but many feel ashamed to seek medical help. He urged the public to seek medical attention promptly if they experience difficulties, emphasizing that stress can contribute to constipation, thus leading to hemorrhoids. He encouraged people to maintain peace of mind and consume plenty of greens to ease bowel movements.
Dr. Annet Namara, founder of Kadoth Clinics, also pointed out that hemorrhoids can result from straining during bowel movements, diarrhea, pregnancy, and the use of family planning medications that may interfere with the digestive system. She advised the public to prioritize eating greens and vegetables, avoid hard foods like posho and kikomando, drink plenty of water, and seek medical advice when necessary.
Dr. Willy Rukundo, a specialist at Doctor’s Corner Clinic, added that hemorrhoids often affect people aged 45 and above, with women being more prone, especially during pregnancy, due to increased pressure in blood vessels. He also noted that hemorrhoids can be hereditary and prolonged standing hours may increase the risk. He advised the public to avoid foods that cause constipation and ensure regular intake of fluids to prevent the condition.
