The Office of the Prime Minister has delivered 30 tonnes of relief food to hailstorm victims in Rukungiri District. The consignment, which includes 20 tonnes of posho and 10 tonnes of beans, will benefit affected households in Buyanja, Buhunga, Nyakishenyi Sub-Counties, and Rukungiri Municipality.
Presiding over the handover on Wednesday, November 20, 2024, Rukungiri Resident District Commissioner (RDC), Rotarian Steven Nsubuga Bewayo, expressed gratitude to the Office of the Prime Minister for its timely intervention. He warned against the sale of the relief items and vowed to take action against any beneficiaries found engaging in such practices.
“I appreciate the Office of the Prime Minister for their swift response. We will not tolerate any misconduct in the distribution process. Let the food serve its intended purpose,” Bewayo emphasized.
Micheal Byarugaba, the Secretary for Production, Marketing, and Natural Resources, who represented the LC5 Chairperson, commended the District Members of Parliament for advocating for the relief. He called upon Local Council One Chairpersons to ensure transparency and fairness during the distribution process.
“We urge local leaders to uphold transparency. This support is a result of teamwork, and it is our duty to ensure it reaches the right beneficiaries,” Byarugaba stated.
Deputy Chief Administrative Officer (DCAO), Hillary Agaba, applauded the generous support from the Office of the Prime Minister. He called for unity among leaders and cautioned civil servants against misusing the food aid.
“We must work together to ensure proper distribution. Integrity is key, and we cannot allow anyone to take advantage of this relief effort,” Agaba noted.
Isaac Kaharuza, Political Assistant to Hon. Jim Muhwezi Katugugu, the Security Minister and Rujumbura County Member of Parliament, acknowledged the relentless efforts of Members of Parliament in securing the relief. He encouraged patience among non-beneficiaries, assuring them of consideration in subsequent phases.
“This is a collective effort. Let us cooperate during the distribution and remain patient as more support is expected,” Kaharuza said.
The District Disaster Management Committee is scheduled to meet soon to finalize beneficiary allocations, organize transport, and set timelines for distribution across the affected sub-counties. This initiative aims to alleviate the plight of families impacted by the recent hailstorm.
