Rukungiri district’s Resident District Commissioner, Steven Nsubuga Bewaayo, urged the people of Rukungiri to maintain calm, peace, and security in anticipation of International Nurses Day on May 17th. This event will be held in Rukungiri, with Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni expected to be the guest of honor.

Bewaayo conveyed this message during a meeting held today at the district’s main hall, as part of preparations for International Nurses Day. He emphasized the importance of peace and order among the locals and visitors from neighboring areas attending the function. He assured everyone of tight security arrangements, having already coordinated with hotel managements in Rukungiri to ensure safety.

Furthermore, Bewaayo assured the public, especially those in urban areas, of increased patrols to maintain security. He emphasized the importance of adhering to traffic regulations to prevent accidents on the day of the event.

Encouraging a large turnout for President Museveni’s visit, Bewaayo invited everyone to participate in the celebrations.

Meanwhile, Alex Twekwase, the National Organizing Secretary for the Uganda Nurses and Midwives Union, expressed delight in Rukungiri being chosen to host the event with the President as the guest of honor. He called upon all nurses and midwives to attend in large numbers for a successful day. Twekwase noted the arrival of visitors from neighboring districts and abroad to partake in the festivities.

He also encouraged nurses to attend a conference scheduled for tomorrow at Immaculate Heart Girls’ School.

Florence Buhinda Rwabahiima, Chairperson of the Board of Trustees of the Uganda Nurses and Midwives Union, emphasized the need for unity among nurses and midwives to ensure the success of the day. She explained that this year’s celebration, typically held on May 12th, was postponed to May 17th due to the ongoing National Census and housing population exercise in Uganda.

The theme for this year, “Nurses are Tomorrow’s Future and Economy for Healthcare,” underscores the essential role of nursing in achieving health, security, and prosperity goals. Rwabahiima urged all Member States to invest in nursing, drawing inspiration from Florence Nightingale’s legacy, to uphold this noble profession.
