Members of the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) in Rukungiri District, aspiring to transition to the People’s Front for Freedom (PFF), on Friday celebrated the Court of Appeal’s decision to summon and disband the Court Martial from charging civilians.

The celebrations included a symbolic walk from Heritage Hotel in Southern Division, Rukungiri Municipality, following the District Conference meeting, to the Head Office along Rubabo Road.

During the meeting, members announced the dissolution of the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) party in Rukungiri District, signaling their transition to the People’s Front for Freedom (PFF), which is currently under registration. They also declared a sit-down demonstration, scheduled for Monday, 3rd February 2025, which will take the form of a public holiday.

As part of the holiday demonstration, members resolved to camp at the offices for prayers, while urging the public to cease daily activities, including students staying home from school, shop closures, and general relaxation at home.

Hon. Naboth Namanya, the Rubabo County Member of Parliament, criticized members for their silence during Dr. Kiiza Besigye’s incarceration. He commended the Constitutional Court for exercising its authority by declaring the Court Martial’s actions against civilians unconstitutional. Hon. Namanya also urged the opposition in Rukungiri to participate in Monday’s demonstration to protest Dr. Kiiza Besigye’s controversial arrest by the Court Martial.

Hon. Betty Muzanira, the former Rukungiri District Woman Member of Parliament, praised the members for their determination and encouraged them to remain loyal to the ideals of Dr. Kiiza Besigye. She urged them to demonstrate unwavering support, resembling a “die-hard” spirit for Besigye, which she said was essential for securing the future of their shared ideology.

Ms. Honest Tushemereirwe, the Assistant FDC Chairperson for Rukungiri Municipality and deputy to Dr. Kiiza Besigye, expressed concern over Besigye’s deteriorating health while in jail. She called for serious prayers and increased visitation to show solidarity and witness his suffering firsthand.

Lydia Kyomukama Mugasho, the FDC Secretary, confirmed the authenticity of a worrying photo of Dr. Kiiza Besigye circulating on social media. She revealed that Besigye had been denied access to food and refused meals prepared in prison, suspecting potential poisoning. She urged the public to continue praying for his safety.

Members also resolved to organize a massive visit to Luzira Prison soon to show solidarity with Dr. Kiiza Besigye.
