In a significant step towards promoting healthier, more sustainable eating habits, Rukungiri District has enthusiastically joined the #ThriveAfricaVeganSchoolLunch campaign.
Spearheaded by the Rukungiri Pamoja Farmers Association (RUPFA), the initiative aims to introduce affordable, plant-based lunch options in schools to combat health issues, support animal welfare, and contribute to environmental conservation.
According to John Kashobera the Executive director of Rukungiri Pamoja Farmers Association (RUPFA), the campaign has successfully collaborated with prominent schools in the district, including Makobore High School, Kinyasano Primary School, Kinyasano Girls, and the recently added Rukungiri Universal Primary School.
He revealed that the goal is to extend this transformative project to a total of 15 schools, empowering them to provide nutritious plant-based meals as an alternative to animal-based foods associated with health risks such as hypertension, type 2 diabetes, and certain cancers.
Kashobera also added that one of the core aspects of the initiative is the training provided to school cooks and students, equipping them with the skills to prepare delicious and affordable vegan dishes for daily school lunches and the broader agenda is to create awareness about the advantages of a plant-based diet.
